A word is text separated by spaces. A sentence ends at a period, question mark, or exclamation mark.

How to count words

1. Paste or type the text. The counts update as you go.

2. Use Characters when a form has a length limit.

3. Use Characters without spaces when the limit ignores blanks.

Word count and character count

A word count splits the text on spaces. “New York” is two words. The character count includes every letter, space, and punctuation mark. Characters without spaces drops the blanks, which matches a limit that ignores them. A line break counts as a character and also separates words.

How a sentence is counted

A sentence ends at a period, a question mark, or an exclamation mark. “Hello. How are you?” is two sentences. Text with no ending mark still counts as one sentence when it contains words. The counter does not score readability or keyword density.
