JSON Formatter

Format or minify JSON in your browser, and see the parse error when it is not valid.

The JSON stays in this browser. Format uses two spaces. Minify removes the space that is not inside a string.

How to format JSON

1. Paste the JSON into the box.

2. Choose Format to read it, or Minify to shorten it.

3. If it is not valid JSON, the note under the box says why.

What JSON is

JSON is a text format for data. It uses braces for objects, square brackets for lists, and double quotes for names and text. Numbers, true, false, and null are written without quotes. APIs and config files use it because a program can read the structure back exactly.

Format JSON and minify JSON

Formatting adds line breaks and two spaces so a person can read the objects and lists. Minifying removes that space, except the space inside a string, so the same data takes fewer bytes. The values do not change. Only the layout does.

When JSON is not valid

A trailing comma, a single quote, or a comment is not JSON. The note names the spot the parser stopped. Fix that spot and format again. This page does not send the text anywhere.
