The New AI-Model Can Predict Earthquakes with 70% Accuracy with Previous Seismic Data

There’s a new AI model developed by researchers at the University of Texas at Austin. This new AI algorithm has a 70-percent accuracy in predicting earthquakes as per a 7-month study made in China. Coming to the newest studies, AI development was made to predict earthquakes. The algorithm will help in reducing the impact of natural calamities upon humans and structures.

The AI model developed by researchers at the University of Texas at Austin has made a trained algorithm that can detect statistical changes in real time.

The AI algorithm will check out the older data of the previous earthquakes along with the new real-time seismic data combined to predict this calamity. It’s a big leap for researchers as they can rely on the data to minimize the impact of natural disasters before the event takes place.

The model with artificial intelligence was trained by the developers to identify statistical changes in real-time seismic data. The data will be put side-by-side with the previous earthquake data for comparison with the real-time data to provide accurate predictions. The whole algorithm was developed by a team led by Sergey Fomel, a professor at the Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas.

AI-Model Developed by Researchers to Predict Earthquakes to Reduce Impact

During the training of the AI model, the team did a weekly forecast which had an accurate prediction of the magnitudes of the 14 earthquakes. These earthquakes were predicted within the range of a 200-mile radius of their indicated locations. However, the algorithm during the experiment failed to predict one earthquake and indicated eight false alerts.

Sergey Foley says

The holy grail is earthquake forecasting. Although we’re not quite ready to make global predictions. Our success suggests that an issue that was previously thought to be insurmountable might really be solved. It’s not yet known if the same approach will work in other locations. But, this effort represents a significant milestone in AI-driven earthquake forecasting.

Furthermore, it’s quite a straightforward approach from the team. The AI was provided with a set of statistical attributes based on their understanding of earthquake physics.

Then, training the model for a five-year archive of seismic recordings for gathering relatively closer information on future earthquakes. Once the AI has full potential for training, the model can predict earthquakes by catching seismic activity around Earth tremors.

However, the success rate of AI predicting earthquakes has even more potential, and with extensive training, this can be achieved. The predictions can now show the seismic indications within the ten miles.

It can predict in strong sisemic network places like California, Italy, Japan, Greece, Turkey, and Texas. Trainers of this new AI model are confident about the new development. The model will definitely help in reducing the overall impact made during earthquakes.
