Microsoft to terminate the support of Android apps in its subsystem

Chandan Pandit • Updated March 8, 2024 • 3 min read • Leave a Comment

Microsoft has been lately closing many projects that are not generating enough revenue. The next project to hit the wave is the Windows subsystem for Android. Back during the launch of Windows 11, Microsoft announced another new feature that made their users very happy; and it was none other than the native support of Android apps in the subsystem. The Windows subsystem for Android is a platform where users can actively download and use Android apps directly on their Windows PCs or computers.

The firm has now officially decided to shut the support for Windows subsystem for Android. The exact reason behind this bold move remains unknown but it is most likely because of the platform not generating sufficient revenue to survive. It has been said that Microsoft had to pay the WSA developers who used to create apps for this platform.

Why is Microsoft ending support for Android apps?

But because of a lack of revenue, the overall margin of Microsoft went into deficit which resulted in them taking this step to discontinue the service. But anyway, the brand is not ending the support just now. The users still have almost a year left. Users are free to download any application before the given deadline of March 5th, 2025. After that, users won’t be able to download any apps.

Concerning whether the apps would be able to run or not? The brand says that the app would still run fine after the deadline but because of the lack of support and updates, it may not work for a very long time. But there’s a catch. Even though users are given a deadline of a year, the Amazon Appstore and other Android-related searches will no longer appear in the Microsoft store starting March 6th, 2024.

Now this is kind of confusing as to why Microsoft decided not the bring Android apps or the Amazon Appstore on search even though the deadline is still far ahead. So basically if you have the subsystem and Amazon Appstore installed on your device, you are free to download the apps and services before the deadline. And if not, it is an indirect ban for you. You won’t be able to download and use it officially.

This is not a good step by Microsoft. Even though the Windows subsystem for Android was far from perfect, something is always better than nothing. And now it’s time to bid our farewell to the Windows subsystem for Android.
